Lexy's Local Podcast: Chicana: Liberated & Empowered Art Show Interview

I got to chat with Betty Bangs and Patricia Aguayo who are curating the 3rd Annual Chicana Art Exhibition inspired by the Chicana Mujerista spirit that we all identify with.

"The art show is important because it gives the space for identity without compromise," Aguayo said, "We don't exclude anybody. Everyone is welcome to the celebration. We just want to honor what we do. We want to honor our roots and our identity."

During the show, sales from merch and accepted donations will go to fund permits and supplies necessary for a future mural by Aguayo in Chicano Park. The commissioned piece will occupy one of four walls in a new bathroom at the park. Aguayo's will be the only female work represented in the new project.

"Let's let them know what a woman can do. You can have all three walls, she's got one and she's going to make it go big or go home," Betty Bangs said of her friend. "I love bragging about her."

Earlier this year, Aguayo's art was chosen as to represent Chicano Park Day on their 49th annual poster.

This is “la sad girl”. She was such an important process piece for me. Communing with this emotion when everyone tells you to be strong was humbling. Now that I’ve chilled with her, I realize strength is in validating all your emotions. Loss is powerful and sadness necessary. I love this piece but feel that symbolically she should go into the world and commune with those with heavy hearts that need love and light. This original piece can be yours for an unbelievable price tomorrow at Iron Fist Brewery. She’s small 5”x7” but she’s spicy.#chicana #chicanaart#arttherapy#fundraiser #ironfistbrewery #migrants#heretostat#immigrantrising#spiderwoman #berenicebadilloart #sadgirl #arttherapy #ndnuarttherapy #advocate #ally #sanctuary
